How to inflate a paddle with an electric pump?

Are you a water sports enthusiast who likes to go stand up paddling? Before heading to the beach, consider inflating your paddle with an electric paddle inflator. Be aware that a poorly inflated paddle will deform easily and you will have difficulty finding your balance. However, inflating a paddle should follow a few steps if you want to enjoy a great ride. In this article you will find out how to inflate your paddle with an electric pump.

Prepare the paddle before inflating it

Before you inflate your paddle, make sure you have enough space to easily unfold it to its full length. Also pay attention to where you are going to inflate it with your electric paddle inflator. Choose a smooth, flat and clean surface. This way, your board will not be damaged.

Examine the position of the valve

  • With the valve, air can enter or leave your paddle.
  • Before you plug in your electric paddle inflator, pay attention to the position of the valve.
  • Make sure that the valve pin is fully up. If it is not positioned correctly upwards, air will escape from the valve when you remove your electric paddle pump.

Inflating the paddle with the electric inflator

Now insert the hose from your electric paddle pump into the inflation valve. Make sure that the end of the hose is perfectly blocked. Inflate and stay in line with the pump. Bend your knees and keep your back straight. Use your body weight to press the electric paddle inflator effectively. Be aware that you do not have to inflate to the specified pressure.

What pressure should I use to inflate a paddle?

The paddle world generally uses the Anglo-Saxon unit of measurement “PSI” or Pounds per Square Inch. 1 bar = 14.5037738 PSI. Your paddle should be inflated to at least 15 PSI. If it is below this value, your board will be too soft and unstable. In general, inflation varies depending on the size and model of the board. Always refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

What about the inflation time of the paddle?

The time it takes to inflate a paddle generally depends on the size of the board and the type of pump used. A large board takes a long time to inflate. It can take an average of 5 to 10 minutes to inflate a board. Plugged into a cigarette lighter socket, your electric paddle inflator will inflate your board to 15PSI in only ten minutes.

Can I deflate my paddle between uses?

If you can carry your paddle on the roof of your car and place it at home, there is no need to deflate it after each use. However, reduce the pressure slightly (2 or 3 PSI). This is to release a little air while avoiding overpressure. Store your paddle away from moisture and sunlight. Choose a place that is not subject to sudden temperature changes.
